4,898 city men will be honoured

Thousands of Sheffield men who died during the First World War are to be honoured on the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

A plaque and a parade will remember the 4,898 men who lost their lives, as part of a national initiative by the Field in Trust and the Royal British Legion.

Sheffield City Counnominated Weston Park as a ‘Centenary Field,’ and the parade will take place there on July 1 from 11am, followed by the dedication of a new plaque.

A commemoration will also be held in Sheffield Memorial Park in France, where a group - including Her Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Sheffield Denise Fox - will remember the 500 members of the Sheffield City Battalion that were taken casualty on the first day of battle.

The Centenary Fields programme 2014 to 2018 aims to protect, forever, at least one green space in every local authority area across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland to commemorate the centenary of the First World War and provide recreational land for future generations to enjoy.

Coun Mary Lea, cabinet member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, said: “This is an important date in Sheffield’s history and we will be united as one in remembering those from Sheffield who tragically lost their lives.”
