40ft container heading to Syria

The people of Sheffield have donated a 40ft container of clothes and medicines to refugees fleeing war torn Syria.

The container, which also contains enough money to purchase approximately 26 tonnes of food, will be transported via Turkey to Northern Syria.

The collection has been made over the course of six months and the donations have been sorted by volunteers. Regular clothes donations have also been sent to Calais, Greece and Syria.

Volunteer lead on the project, Val Huzzard, said: “This project came about after a group of volunteers took it upon themselves to fundraise for a #Sheffield2Syria container.

“We have now raised over £15,000 which will used to buy rice and tinned food in bulk and to pay for transport costs. We are delighted to have reached this stage, where we are ready to load the container after the fantastic fundraising efforts of the Sheffield community.”

Volunteer Shahid Ali added: “Seeing the generosity of the Sheffield community has been a humbling experience. Diverting frustrations and sadness towards a positive goal, has been a great achievement.”
