20mph limit moves ahead

A CITYWIDE 20 mph speed limit on all residential streets in Sheffield could move a step closer after Green Party councillors won a council vote on the move.

The party’s two councillors, Jillian Creasy and Rob Murphy, who represent Central Ward, had their motion passed at a full council meeting, with support from Labour.

The motion calls on the ruling Lib Dems to “bring forward plans” for a city-wide 20 mph zone, which they believe would lead to a reduction in the 200 serious road accident casualties in the city each year.

But the Lib Dems say they will continue their policy to introduce the zones in areas where there is demand from residents - adding that neither Green councillor had requested any 20 mph zones in the Central Ward area.
