20-year-old arrested for murder as man dies after Sheffield city centre attack

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man found injured in Sheffield city centre died of his injuries.

A 20-year-old man has tonight been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The arrest comes after a 37-year-old man was found with serious head injuries in Devonshire Green, near the West One bars, on August 31st.

He was taken to hospital but died last night (Monday, September 5).

The arrested man currently remains in police custody being questioned by detectives.

The injured man was found with a serious head injury following a reported assault at about 3.45pm on Wednesday 31 August. He was immediately taken to hospital but died last night (Monday 5 September).

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Ashmore said: “The investigation surrounding what happened to the victim remains ongoing and we are now treating this as a murder investigation.

“We remain keen to hear from anyone who was in the West One Plaza and Devonshire Green area on the afternoon of Wednesday 31 August.

“We are continuing to pursue a number of lines of enquiry in relation to this matter and a post-mortem examination will be carried out later today to determine the exact cause of death.”
