18th century milestone spotted after draining of Sheffield reservoir

The prolonged dry spell and a draining of Redmires Reservoirs has led to this submerged 18th century milestone being visual.

Cyclist Adam Simmonite spotted it while on a ride in the sunny weather and said he was amazed by some of the landmarks in the area.

He said: "They have drained the reservoir while they repair the retaining walls and it's just amazing some of the stuff up there.

"It's very unusual for it to be like it is. I am no expert but I think it's fantastic and there are so many signs of Sheffield's industrial heritage around the A57 and Redmires."

Matt, who is the event organiser for the Sheffield Urban Cyclo Cross cycle race series, said he thought the milestone dated back to the 18th century but added he'd be interested to find out more about it.

He said: "I would say it dates back to about the 18th century looking at the type of face on it and I am not sure whether it should stay where it is or whether it should be in a museum but it's just fascinating."

The Urban Cyclo Cross next race will be at Park Hill on Saturday, July 28, with junior races starting at 10am and adult races beginning at noon.

The group has also previously held a race in Kelham Island and will hold an event at the Olympic Legacy Park in September.
