GOALKEEPER

Mathew Ryan, Brighton

When selecting a goalkeeper for your fantasy football squad, clean sheets aren't everything.

Goalkeepers earn a point for every three shots saved, meaning that a keeper less glamorous than say, David De Gea, could harvest plenty of points.

Brighton staved off relegation last season partly thanks to dogged performances between the sticks from Socceroo Maty Ryan.

The 26-year-old earned the 5th most points by a goalkeeper in the Fantasy Premier League, despite his low price tag.

Cost: £4.5m

DEFENDERS

Aaron Cresswell, West Ham

The West Ham United full-back has been a near permanent fixture for the Hammers since joining in 2014 - and for three of those four seasons the left-sided player has earned over 100 points on Fantasy Premier League.

The defender is capable of earning an assist for his club and picking up a clean sheet making him a safe and decent value option in defence.

Cost: £5.5m

Jamaal Lascelles, Newcastle

The 24-year-old enjoyed a break-out season for Newcastle last season, scoring three goals, earning nine clean sheets and racking up 116 FPL points.

The Magpies captain is being linked with moves to Chelsea and Liverpool where it is likely he would enjoy less playing time. We recommend selecting the centre-back if he stays with Newcastle, but reassessing if a bigger club comes calling.

Cost: £5m

Dejan Lovren, Liverpool

The Croatian earns a bad press due to infrequent mistakes.

However, alongside Virgil van Dijk, Lovren appears a more assured performer and solid performances in Champions League and World Cup finals can't have done his confidence any harm.

£5m represents excellent value for a defender who is first choice for a top four club and capable of scoring the odd goal.

Cost: £5m

Mathias Jorgensen, Huddersfield Town

Mathias Jorgensen (or as his teammates know him Zanka) was another solid performer for Huddersfield Town during their debut season in the Premier League.

The towering Dane made 38 appearances for the Terriers last year, earning ten clean sheets in the process and chipping in with two assists - in total he racked up 107 points.

Zanka has consolidated his place in the Huddersfield back four and, avoiding injury, will be a permanent fixture for Town in their second Premier League season.

If you're strapped for cash Jorgensen is a great option for your backline.

MIDFIELDERS

Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Burnley

Burnley enjoyed a remarkable season last year, finishing seventh and earning an unprecedented place in the Europa League.

A stalwart for the over-performing Clarets was Icelandic winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson. The 27-year-old provided nine assists to teammates and scored a further two goals himself.

£6m represents great value for a player who racked up 117 fantasy points last season - more than Mesut Ozil, Bernardo Silva and Juan Mata.

Cost: £6m

Pascal Gross, Brighton

Since moving to the south coast from FC Inglostadt 04 last summer, Pascal Gross has been a priceless player for the Albion.

He has scored seven goals and made eight assists from midfield, finishing the season as the club's second top scorer.

£7m is hardly bargain basement territory, but the price is justified - the German scored 164 points last season, making him the top scoring midfielder outside of the top five.

Cost: £7m

Luka Milivojević, Crystal Palace

Luka Milivojević took eight penalties for the Eagles last season and missed just one.

The Serb is trusted from the spot by his club and should be trusted by FPL players given the enormous points total he achieved last season - 144 in total.

Cost: £6.5m

Ryan Sessegnon, Fulham

Despite never playing a Premier League game, Ryan Sessegnon is already becoming a household name in England and for good reason.

The 18-year-old scored 16 goals and made eight assists last season despite playing the start of the season at left-back.

Choosing Sessegnon represents something of a gamble, given his inexperience at the country's top table, but at £6.5m it's a gamble worth taking.

Cost: £6.5m

STRIKERS

Josh King, Bournemouth

Josh King isn't going to challenge Mo Salah or Harry Kane for the golden boot, but he will provide you bucketfuls of points at a cut price.

The Norwegian has scored a total of 386 points over the past three seasons - not bad for a striker that costs just £6.5m.

Cost: £6.5m

Marko Arnautovic, West Ham

Marko Arnautovic justified his £25m price tag last season, creating 18 goals for a poor West Ham United side.

With the London club now bolstered by recruits, the Austrian could well enjoy better service next season.

Since joining Stoke City in 2013 the powerful attacker has averaged 130 points a season - a very healthy total, indeed.

Cost: £7m
