100-year-old has lived in same house in Sheffield for 65 years

Rose Lycett hosted a party at her home on Harborough Avenue in Manor Park, which was attended by members of her extended family and Sheffield Lord Mayor Coun Denise Fox.

Rose’s granddaughter Vicki South, aged 45, attended the birthday celebrations with her children, Oliver, 19, Molly, nine, and Betsy, seven.

She said: “It was a brilliant day – she had a lovely time.

“Grandma received her special telegram from the Queen which she was absolutely thrilled about.

“She read it out to all the family and it was a lovely moment for everyone who came.

“It was good of the Lord Mayor to drop in – grandma really appreciated it.

“She was still keen to clean up after the party even on her own birthday!”

Born in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, in 1916, Rose was a housekeeper and later came to Sheffield for work.

She met her husband Jack and the pair were married in 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II.

Jack was captured by Nazi soldiers and spent time in a prisoner of war camp in Germany.

Granddaughter Vicki said the Germans didn’t treat him badly and Rose often sent letters and pictures to the camp where he was held.

Vicki added: “I think her secret on getting to 100-years-old is keeping busy – she’s still really active.”
