University works with colleges to deliver new qualifications and bridge South Yorkshire’s skills gap

To equip learners with skills for today’s jobs market, Sheffield Hallam University has reached a collaborative agreement with four of South Yorkshire’s Further Education colleges. Find out how they can help you.

A shared commitment between Sheffield Hallam University and Barnsley College, DN Colleges Group, RNN Group and The Sheffield College, is set to deliver new Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) as a pathway to jobs for students.

HTQs are available for continuing students aged over 18, as well as adults seeking to retrain or upskill for well-paid, secure and sustainable employment.

The new Level 4 and 5 qualifications can follow on from Level 3 studies such as A levels or T Levels, and include qualifications such as higher national certificates, higher national diplomas and foundation degrees.

The new HTQs, which are on a full roll-out across 15 occupational sectors by 2025, are set to transform the educational landscape and provide learners with industry-relevant skills while enhancing their employability.

£1.3m funding to help provide HTQs

To support the new collaboration and aid the delivery of HTQs, the region has secured £1.3m from the Government’s Higher Technical Education Skills Injection Fund.

Working together on the provision of HTQs at Level 4 and 5 will support the regional pipeline of learners undertaking T Levels and Level 3 courses, connecting to developments in the Lifelong Learning Entitlement. It will also pool efforts to make the most of the potential of HTQs in the region and raise their profile across local communities.

HTQs are employer-led qualifications, which ensure they provide the work-ready skills demanded by industry. They are rigorously approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education, so learners can be assured of their high quality.

The qualifications are also eligible for the same student finance that degree-level study attracts, so enables an accessible and effective route for students to gain valuable skills and enhance their employability.

After being initially rolled out in stages since 2022, HTQs are already available for students in South Yorkshire. For more details of what is available in the South Yorkshire College Partnership Group, please visit:
