Met Office issues amber weather warning – with Sheffield set for 24 hours of snow

According to the Met Office, travel delays on roads are likely in the city, with the chance of stranding some vehicles and passengers.

Some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are also likely and there is a warning that power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

Sheffield woke to a blanket of snow this morning and further heavy snow is forecast from first thing until around 1pm.

There is further heavy snow expected between 3pm and 6pm.

Light snow is expected at all other times today, with temperatures set to drop to -2.

There is more snow forecast overnight and into the early hours of tomorrow as the cold snap continues to bite.

Most of England and Scotland are covered by snow and ice warnings today amid the nation’s ongoing cold snap.

The Met Office has issued severe amber snow warnings for London and south-east England.

Snow accumulations of 5-10 centimetres will be widespread in the affected area, and reaching up to 30cm in ‘a few sites’.

Areas under the warning comprise the outskirts of south-east London, plus Kent, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk.

Another amber warning is in place from Nottinghamshire, north into Sheffield and east into Lincolnshire.

Accumulations of 3-8cm will be widespread, reaching to 15cm in some areas, including the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Both amber warnings are in place until Monday afternoon.

Many parts of the country face another day of temperatures at or around freezing point, as bitterly cold conditions continue due to strong easterly winds stemming from Ukraine and the Black Sea.

Less intense yellow snow and ice warnings remain in place for most of England, the east of Scotland, and Northern Ireland south of Belfast.

Low pressure system, Storm Darcy, is continuing to cause heavy snow and strong winds to East Anglia and south-east England, the Met Office said.

The cold snap driven by the easterly winds is not expected to be as widespread as the Beast From The East in 2018.
