Men arrested on suspicion of arson after residents trapped in burning Sheffield flats

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after a blaze at a block of flats in Sheffield.

The fire on Batemoor Road broke out last night and emergency services were deployed.

A number of residents were trapped in the burning building and were rescued by firefighters.

Others climbed down ladders after concerned residents came to their aid.

It is reported that a child had to be thrown out of a window to a member of the public below.

South Yorkshire Police said: “Officers were called to reports of a fire at a flat on Batemoor Road, Sheffield, at 8.45pm last night.

“It is reported a middle floor flat had deliberately been set on fire.

“South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue attended and controlled the fire, and evacuated residents from the flat above and below. Nobody was injured.

“Three men have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.”
