Leon Mathias, aged 32, from Barnsley, was charged with murder and wounding yesterday following a two-year investigation into the death of a baby in 2018.

An investigation was launched after emergency services were called to a house in Great Houghton, Barnsley, just before 9pm on Friday, November 20, 2018.

A baby boy was taken to hospital but died on Monday, December 3, 2018.

A 29-year old woman from Barnsley, who was previously arrested on suspicion of wounding, has been released with no further action to be taken.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Mark Oughton, said: “I understand this extremely tragic case caused significant distress to the local community in November 2018. The loss of a baby’s life is truly devastating, and the thoughts of my team and I continue to be with those affected.”
