Loved and Lost: Sheffield passes heartbreaking milestone of 1,000 coronavirus deaths

Sheffield has now passed the grim milestone of 1,000 coronavirus deaths, new NHS figures have revealed.

Five further recorded deaths have pushed the city's tally up to 1,001 people who have died from Covid within 28 days of testing positive for the virus, NHS England has said.

The city has already surpassed that total with the number of deaths where Covid-19 has been mentioned on the death certificate.

That figure currently stands at 1,062.

Meanwhile, the city’s hospitals have now seen a total of 802 deaths – with the figure increasing by five since yesterday.

Doncaster has seen 6745 deaths, an increase of one, while Rotherham has recorded 521 deaths, an increase of two.

Barnsley has seen 534 deaths, up five on yesterday’s total.

Nationally, there have been more than 109,000 coronavirus deaths in the UK and nearly four million cases.

More than 10 million people have now received a Covid-19 vaccine jab.
