Have your say

You can get food from every corner of the world in Sheffield these days – exotic treats that have become British favourites and more unusual dishes that you probably haven’t tried before.

So when I stepped inside Des Amis on Chesterfield Road I was looking forward to something a bit different for lunch.

And I got it. A selection of three dips including hummus, one made from aubergine and another from kidney beans alongside a deliciously refreshing fatoush salad.

As you might expect the children were happy to try some of the well presented, fairly quickly cooked, and delicious Middle Eastern offerings but, as they had been to Des Amis before, their eyes were set on something else.

Now I am often pleased that my family are happy to sample new things but there are rare occasions when their mind is set and you can do nothing to change it.

In this case the great Des Amis milkshake and stupendously scrumptious chocolate fudge cake were to blame.

The milkshakes are made from real ice cream and, although they are just about the only thing on the menu that isn’t a bargain, for £3.50 taste amazing.

Everything about the cake is tasty, especially the two small dishes of vanilla ice cream which accompany it.

That might not be what you would expect from a cafe which aims to create an identical experience to the Shisha Cafes of the Middle East.

Far too often the drinks and puddings are a badly thought through add on and a great disappointment. Not here though.

You’ll probably also be surprised at the range of the menu from croissants and burgers to full English breakfast and perfect coffee.

Fear not though, just because they offer a wide range does not mean they don’t do it all well. And you are certain to find something you haven’t seen anywhere else before. Everything is good at Des Amis so go on, take their advice and experience a little bit of the Middle East right here in Sheffield ... or just pop in for amazing puddings.
