Admiral has said it will give back a total of £110 million to all its car and van policyholders, a sum that covers 4.4 million vehicles.

Claims are expected to plunge as the volume of traffic on the roads has declined massively.

The group said the refunds will be made automatically by the end of May for all cars and vans covered by a policy on April 20 to ‘reflect that there have been fewer cars on the road during the lockdown’.

It has also committed £80 million towards lowering the cost of its cover, as well as for further initiatives to support NHS staff and local communities.

Cristina Nestares, chief executive of UK insurance at Admiral, said: "This is an unprecedented time when people across the country are driving significantly less than before the lockdown, and we expect this to lead to a fall in the number of claims we are seeing.

"We want to give the money we would have used to pay these claims back to our loyal customers in this difficult time."

More insurance companies are under pressure to match the firm’s offer.

Gareth Shaw, head of money at the consumer champion Which?, said: "Firms that act fairly now may see that they are rewarded in the future, and we encourage all other car insurers to follow Admiral's lead.”
