How many characters you can have in a tweet?

And what does the C in ICT actually stand for?

If you know the answers, then you could well be in the 23 per cent of Sheffielders that a new survey has revealed are the city’s most tech-savvy.

The research, conducted by online smartphone retailer e2save, tested participants with a series of UK curriculum-inspired tech questions, and found that more than one in five Sheffield residents got them all correct, making the city the most tech-savvy in the UK.

The figures saw 23 per cent of Sheffielders gain a perfect score, beating out London (13 per cent), Nottingham (12 per cent), Manchester (10 per cent), and Norwich (10 per cent).

Sheffield residents saw the most success (96 per cent) with a question asking: ‘If information is stored on the internet, what is it called?’ while nearly half (46 per cent) didn’t know how many characters were originally allowed in a tweet when Twitter was first launched.

The question that people across the board struggled with the most was who invented the mobile phone, with more than a third (36 per cent) answering Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web, and 16 per cent answering Apple’s co-founder, Steve Jobs, instead of Martin Cooper.

Andrew Cartledge, mobile expert at e2save, said: “Technology is part of most of our daily lives, we’re constantly surrounded by tech in one way or another, so it’s easy to think you’re tech-savvy when it comes to commonly-heard terms.

“These questions are all inspired by the technology curriculum, so it goes to show that school kids can definitely teach us a thing or two!

“There are plenty of resources out there that can help you get clued up on tech, including things like Google Garage or how-to guides from many of the major manufacturers, so we’d encourage people to take a look if they want to learn something new.”
