Tier 3 measures are designed for areas with a ‘very high’ Covid-19 infection rate and where tighter restrictions are in place.

The restrictions placed on Tier 3 areas can vary, and are based on discussions between central and local government.

As of today, Tier 3 restrictions only reply to Liverpool City Region, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire.

As a minimum, Tier 3 rules mean people must not mix with anyone they do not live with or have formed a support bubble with.

They apply to all indoor settings, private gardens and most hospitality venues and ticketed events.

People must not socialise in a group of more than six in outdoor public spaces such as parks, beaches, the countryside, a public garden or a sports venue.

Pubs and bars must also close close under the new regulations unless they operate as a restaurant, serving substantial meals and only serving alcohol with that food.

According to Government guidance, those living in Tier 3 areas should avoid travelling out of the region.

Likewise, people should avoid travelling into Tier 3 areas.

Exceptions can be made for travel for work, education, youth services or to meet care responsibilities.

People can also travel through Tier 3 areas as part of a longer journey.

The advice issued so far is that travel to venues or amenities that are open for work or to access education are allowed, but people should aim to reduce the number of journeys made.

Residents from Tier 3 areas are advised to avoid staying overnight in another part of the UK, and people from Tiers 1 and 2 are urged to avoid staying overnight in Tier 3 areas.

Many parents have half term holidays booked for their families later this month.

People in Tier 3 zones can take a holiday, but the advice is to only do so in local hotels and holiday accommodation to avoid leaving the area.

Households must also not mix in the holiday accommodation.
