Bakewell, Castleton and Hathersage are classic spots to visit, but there are many wonderful lesser-known places that are well worth seeing.
Here are 10 of the best villages in the National Park that may be less familiar.
5. Fenny Bentley
Fenny Bentley is in the southern part of the Peak Park, two miles north of Ashbourne. The church of St Edmund has an unusual monument to Thomas and Agnes Beresford who, together with their 21 children, are shown covered in a shroud. There are pubs, too - The Coach and Horses and the Bentley Brook Inn. Photo: Jason Chadwick
6. Tideswell
Tideswell near Buxton is one of the Peak District's bigger villages. It is home to the church of St John the Baptist, known as the 'Cathedral of the Peak' - this was built entirely in the 14th century. Photo: Jason Chadwick
7. Sheldon
Sheldon, close to Bakewell, is near Magpie Mine, a lead mine with an engine house built in the Cornish style. Photo: Anne Shelley
8. Edale
Edale, in the Hope Valley, is chiefly popular with walkers heading to nearby Kinder Scout, and benefits from regular trains to Sheffield and Manchester. Photo: James Hardisty
