Queues of 20 people braving the heavy rain were pictured snaking down the street to get into butchers shops on Middlewood Road, Hillsborough this morning (Wednesday, December 23).

One shopper said: “Two friends queued an hour at 8am as queues went down the street, around the corner and on to a side street.

It could be that people are racing to grab last minute turkeys, those essential pig in blankets and other meats after Sheffielders saw their ‘five day’ Christmas bubble plans scuppered last weekend.

Many hoping to visit their families have been left stranded in the city and will have to cook their own Christmas Dinner this year.

Shoppers have been warned against panic buying following the introduction of Tier 4 restrictions.
