The route to rest and relaxation with Titanic Spa

It seems a misnomer to name a tranquil getaway after a tragic ship but Titanic Spa does offer everything you could need for a restful day

Internally, its padded doors with portholes and silver chaise longues are a nod to its namesake but sit in its outside hot tub and you’ll see it’s a converted mill tucked away in a leafy corner of Huddersfield.

There’s a salt water pool with atmospheric lights and a circular hub of rooms with an icy plunge pool, an ice cave, sauna and steam room. An aromatherapy room won’t take your breath away as much as the others and offers some gentle respite.

But what really soothes is the relaxation room, an adult’s version of soft play. Minimal lighting plus “shhh” signs lead to huge bean bags pile in a pit by a fire to create a curl up and chill zone.

Around the room are more beanbags and small booths with ergonomically designed chairs, blankets and tiny reading lights for magazines. Talking is frowned upon but you’ll hear a few gentle snores.

If you can’t decide between all the treatments on offer, opt for a little of everything with a Himalayan salt scrub.

Your whole body is gently rubbed with warm blocks of salt then exfoliated by the same salt, ground into tiny pieces. A soothing massage follows then you’re wrapped up cocoon like while your scalp is rubbed. After a shower, the treatment finishes with moisturising body lotion.

The treatment left me incredibly relaxed but also tired and, strangely, with slightly aching muscles - it was possibly all the toxins leaving my body. It’s highly recommended as mentally you’ll be able to completely switch off while physically it’s a detox, massage, exfoliation and moisturising all-in-one. Your mind, muscles and skin will all thank you.

The spa would benefit from a room full of comfy chairs where people can sit and natter. The relaxation lounge is wonderful but talking isn’t encouraged and the only other place to sit is in the restaurant. A few more pool loungers would also be welcomed.

Apart from these minor additions, it’s the perfect place to escape the Christmas merry go round or ease the January blues.
