People will get bags of value and taste with this new food scheme launching in Sheffield

A brand new scheme that aims to cut food poverty and boost health with bags of hearty home cooking — costing just £1 a portion – is due to launch in Sheffield.

Bags of Taste will officially launch its first northern branch next month.

The nonprofit company will run free four-week cookery programmes around the city over the next 12 months, focusing on its most deprived areas.

The courses will see participants and volunteers team up to create dishes from around the world, with a mission to banish expensive takeaways by cooking favourites healthier and cheaper at home.

The varied menu will feature meals from Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia including classics like French onion soup, saag paneer, Caesar salad, Swedish meatballs and Singapore noodles.At the end of each class, cooks will sit and enjoy their creations together. They will then have the chance to buy a £3 bag of ingredients which serves four people, so they can impress friends and family with their new skills.

Participants will also have access to discount cookware, to help them keep up the cookery habit.

Dave Doyle, programme lead for the Sheffield scheme, said: “Bags of Taste has a great track record in helping people to change their eating habits for the better, improving both their health and their financial situation. So I’m very excited to be heading up the project in Sheffield.

“I’m keen to speak with anyone who would like to help us help their neighbours — be they concerned individuals or sympathetic organisations.”

Bags of Taste ran a pilot project in Stocksbridge last year, after which the company won funding from The Newby Trust for a further year of courses.

Company founder Alicia Weston BEM launched Bags of Taste in 2014.

She said: “We see Sheffield as central to our long-term plans; establishing ourselves here will help enable us to reach some of the most deprived areas in the UK.”

The Sheffield branch will have its official launch on Tuesday September 3, at 2pm, at Manor Oaks House.
