We’ve got so many epic winter walks and activities that those looking to explore the outdoors during the colder months are spoiled for choice.

And you don’t have to head out of the city either to soak up all that natural beauty: there is plenty to explore on foot here in Sheffield if you don’t fancy anything too challenging.

Here’s our guide to staying active outdoors this winter:

Aim for the top

The rolling hills, limestone dales and rugged moorland of the Peak District National Park are just a short hop away and it’s an area that offers so many diverse landscapes. Enjoy winter hikes in places like the jaw-dropping land formations at Stanage Edge, Burbage Rocks, which is also a great spot for rock climbing, and Mam Tor – don’t be put off by the height, it’s a relatively easy climb.

The Peak District transforms into a winter wonderland when it snows, making it perfect for both experienced hikers and casual walkers. Another magical place during the winter is the deep valley of Padley Gorge, where you can walk along Burbage Brook and explore the surrounding hills; the ancient woodlands are especially enchanting when they're dusted with frost or snow.

Other beautiful spots to explore

The picturesque Rivelin Valley on the outskirts of Sheffield is great for winter walks. Follow the Rivelin Valley Nature Trail through the woods and check out the cascading waterfalls which are particularly beautiful during the winter months.

Or Wyming Brook Nature Reserve to the west of the city offers a network of trails through woodlands, along a stream, and to beautiful viewpoints. It's a peaceful place for winter hikes and birdwatching.

Keep it local

For those keen to stick to the city limits, Endcliffe Park offers an elegant setting for winter walks. Stroll along the tree-lined pathways, take in the winter scenery and perhaps stop for a hot drink in the park's cafe. And, even in winter, the Sheffield Botanical Gardens maintain their charm. Explore the glass pavilions filled with exotic plants and take a leisurely stroll through the outdoor gardens.

Make sure you’re prepared

If you’re taking part in outdoor activities during the winter, be sure to dress warmly, wear suitable footwear, and check the weather conditions in advance.

Ensure you have adequate daylight for your chosen activity and consider carrying essentials like maps, compasses and extra clothing if you’re heading to more remote spots.
