Bookworms in Meersbrook can broaden their literary horizons after a telephone box became a book exchange overnight.

The kiosk has been fitted with wooden shelves and contains a range of childrens’ books text books and novels.

Residents said the idea was “brilliant”

Declan French of Valley Road said: Someone put a box in there and filled it with books.

"It just appeared overnight – I don’t know who’s responsible but i guess we are all responsible around here now.

“It’s a brilliant idea. I hope people look after it.

“I have had a clear-out of some of my own books and I also have borrowed one which is very interesting.

“I was talking to a woman this morning who borrowed a book about wildlife for her kids.”

The telephone in the kiosk which no longer has a door appears to be in working order.
