Cyclist falls eight feet and lands on back in river after horror accident in Chesterfield

A cyclist was knocked from his bike and fell eight foot into the River Rother, landing on his back, after colliding with a rock.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team said the man was commuting to work along the footpath next to the river in Old Whittington, Chesterfield at around 8.30am on Thursday, 25 June when the accident happened.

A spokesperson said he “collided with a rock that threw him off his bike and down into the water where he landed on his back amongst the boulders in the shallows.”

The man was stuck in the same position for “at least 30 minutes” before he was able to attract the attention of a passer by, who called for assistance.

The team were made aware of the incident at 9.05am and worked with paramedics from East Midlands Ambulance Service and and air ambulance to evacuate the man using a ‘back rope system’.
