A new climbing wall in Sheffield is set to be the biggest of its kind in the UK when it opens later this year.
The Awesome Walls facility at Newhall includes a 16-metre-high competition wall, a spectators’ area and a café.
It is expected to open by September and attract international standard climbers.
Dave Douglas, founder and managing director of Awesome Walls, said: “I wanted to build a super centre which incorporated everything we’d learned in the past in one big wall.
“After looking around the country for somewhere to build this centre, I realised we should take it to the climbers – and so here we are building Awesome Walls in Sheffield, the centre of British climbing.”
The wall will have dedicated facilities to introduce young people to climbing, as well as catering for elite sportspeople.
About 20 staff will be employed at the centre on Garter Street when it opens as the fifth Awesome Walls centre in the UK.
It is also hoped the facility will be the first to meet the British Mountaineering Council’s criteria as a national performance centre of excellence.
