REVEALED: The Sheffield neighbourhoods with the most empty homes

The areas of Sheffield with the most empty homes can be revealed - and scores have been lying disused for at least five years in one neighbourhood.

The Star reported earlier this year how more than 100 properties across the city had been unoccupied for a decade or more, with over 600 vacant for at least two years.

Those figures were branded a 'scandal' by Laura Gordon, the Liberal Democrats' prospective parliamentary candidate for Sheffield Hallam, who urged the Government to give councils more powers to bring empty homes back into use.

The S2 region, including Heeley, Park Hill, Arbourthorne and Woodthorpe, contains 80 properties which have been empty for between five and 10 years - more than a third of the city's total of 216.

It also has the most which have not been used for at least a decade, at 24, which is a sixth of the total 146.

It also contains 17 homes which have not been used for between five and 10 years.

The S10, S11, S5 and S8 postal districts were the other areas with the most long-term empty properties.

The council said these are the council tax eligible properties logged as empty as of April 1 this year, but pointed out that the figures fluctuate regularly and may not represent the latest situation if home owners have failed to inform the council of changes.

A council spokeswoman said: "We are constantly working to bring privately-owned empty properties back into use."

She said this included writing to owners advising them of the support available, including tenant-finding schemes and discounts and grants to which they might be entitled.

If those letters go unanswered, she continued, officers would inspect the property to decide whether its condition merits enforcement action such as carrying out works and billing the owner, or forcing the owner to sell up.

The council said it is currently taking enforcement action on 50 properties which have been empty for over five years, 24 of which have been disused for at least a decade.

"There will be properties that have been empty for a number of years but have no issues associated with them," added the spokeswoman.

"The council's powers are limited with these properties, but we regularly visit those properties which have been empty for over five years and remain on the council tax empties list to monitor their condition and will take action if their condition deteriorates to an extent where they begin to present a hazard."

The Star asked the council why there were so many empty properties within the S2 postal district, but it was unable to provide an explanation.
