One year on from lockdown, homebuyers in Sheffield are choosing family over work

It is one year on from lockdown and as restrictions begin to ease, the pandemic seems to have left a lasting impression when it comes to home buying choices in Sheffield.

Research commissioned by Purplebricks, the UK’s tech-led estate agent, reveals that 43 per cent of homebuyers across Sheffield believe living closer to family is now more important than being closer to work.

Access to open space also appears to be a key factor when it comes to choosing a new home. A significant number of homebuyers surveyed wanted to be close to scenic walks. Here in Sheffield, a third of homebuyers are putting access to the countryside high on their property wish list.

Luke Williams, Local Property Expert for Sheffield at Purplebricks, said: “Since the start of the pandemic we have seen an increase in buyers wanting more outdoor space, more downstairs living space and a home office.

"We have also seen an increasing number of buyers relocating to the area to be closer to family. We’ve seen an increase in demand across all pricing brackets, from £150k to £500k.

“I'm regularly seeing properties have a high number of viewing requests within a couple of days of them going on the market."

Homes with good views are also proving to be a popular choice, with 53% of Sheffield homebuyers stating that good views from a potential new home would help swing their decision.

Gardens take priority in Sheffield, with 59% of homebuyers wanting to know the property’s open space and size in its online listing, before they make a decision on a viewing.

The pandemic has made an impact on the preferred living distance from Sheffield city centre. Of those surveyed, prior to the pandemic the most popular location was six to ten miles away from the city with 42% of buyers. Now this has dropped to 35%.
