For some, the thought of cleaning up piles upon piles of pine needles means an artifical tree that leaves no mess and can be brought down from the loft year after year is the way to go.

But for others, Christmas simply would not be Christmas without the evocative aroma of a real fir or spruce to enjoy in the run-up to the big day and beyond.

1, Longshaw Estate

The rangers at Longshaw, which is based near Fox House, have been selling sustainable Christmas trees to the public for years, the profits from which raise money for conservation projects at the National Trust estate.

This includes making improvements to the habitats of wildlife, creating nest boxes for owls, kestrels and pied flycatchers and supports the development of their tree nursery.

The trees for sale include Norway Spruce, Fraser Firs, Lodgepole Pine and ‘non-drop’ Nordmann Firs.
