Doncaster historic hall on the market

Chartered surveyor and property consultancy Sanderson Weatherall will sell the historic Burghwallis Hall on behalf of the Diocese of Hallam.

Tom Garrud, from the diocese, said: “The building has been a great servant to the diocese and a wonderful home to a family for many hundreds of years before that.

“We’re delighted that Sanderson Weatherall has been appointed to find an appropriate party that will continue preserving and enhancing this amazing building at the heart of the village.”

Offers are being invited for the freehold interest in the Grade II* building on Grange Lane, Burghwallis.

The history of the building can be traced to the Domesday Book.

The property was, until recently, used as a 28-bedroom residential care home.

The hall had been used as St Anne’s Rest Home for elderly women since the 1940s.

Events would be held there to entertain the residents, including a Christmas fair where the Doncaster Ladies Choir performed.

Writing on Facebook, Mo Cantrill recalled: “I have some lovely memories of that building, particularly carol-singing in front of the old ladies.”

Planning documents say later additions to the main building could be removed, which would allow the sympathetic refurbishment of the original parts of the hall and its conversion back to residential use.

It is also anticipated that, subject to the necessary approvals, consent may be given to develop two areas within the hall’s grounds, extending to approximately 0.72 and 0.29 hectares respectively, which could accommodate six detached homes.
