They provided a place, close to home, for people to catch up over a drink and put the world to rights.
Most of these pubs flourished in an era before big chains cornered the market, and smartphones changed most aspects of our lives.
They may not have been the most salubrious of locations to while away an hour or two.
But what they may have lacked in decor or drink selection, they made up for in charm, atmosphere and unbelievable happenings.
Some of these former hostelries may even have earned the reputation of being a bit rough and ready or notorious.
Either way, the void left when these establishments closed their doors for the final time, bringing about the end of an era, continues to be felt by many.
These stories shared by Star readers and former regulars provides just a taste of what it would have been like to go for a pint in the Sheffield of yesteryear.

5. The Parkway
"I used to work on parkhill some characters and vagabonds frequented that watering hole that's for sure," said Mark Padley, on the Lost Pubs of Sheffield Facebook page. The Parkway pub at Sheffield's Park Hill flats, pictured in June 1985 | Picture Sheffield

6. Woodthorpe Arms
The Woodthorpe Arms, on Mansfield Road, Intake, is pictured here at some time during the 1960s or 70s. It was suggested by Deborah Unwin Southwell as one of Sheffield's roughest pubs of yesteryear. Writing on the Lost Pubs of Sheffield Facebook group, one person said: "I heard the landlord had to hide upstairs on one night of violence. He just locked the door and left them to it." But another person wrote: "Used to be our pub of choice on a Sunday night, good disco and buzzing in the early 80s." | Picture Sheffield/Douglas Edward Axe/Brian Douglas Stevens

7. The Cannon
The Cannon pub, on Castle Street, Sheffield city centre, is pictured here in November 1990. It closed more than a decade ago after being branded a 'den of iniquity' and has since been converted into flats. However, a number of people leapt to its defence, with one writing: "The upstairs bar in The Cannon was a bit lively in the early 80s. Great bar staff though and a decent club downstairs. We loved it.” Sandra Fox, meanwhile, commented: "Cannon was great. Did good food as well as the discos." And Ken Jackson recalled: "My dad was the landlord at the Cannon in the 60s. I loved the place. (There were) some rough customers but many were rough diamonds. Great people who were generous to a fault when I got married in 1966." | Picture Sheffield
