Have your say

Here is a sparkling gem shining out from the buildings that once housed Sheffield’s great industries.

The Harland Cafe is rather hidden away among the old works buildings sandwiched between Bramall Lane and London Road.

Fortunately it has a reputation that makes people hunt it out and food which keeps them coming back.

The area around the Harland Cafe used to be known as Little Sheffield, part of the John Street Triangle boasting many cutlery and tool makers.

While most of these have now been consigned to the history books there are still plenty of jobs based here and the menu’s Workers Specials pays testament to that.

The cafe is also truly family orientated whether you are popping in quickly for something to eat or seeking entertainment at one of their special events.

One Sunday each month the Harland opens up for family friendly creative activities ranging from Roald Dahl days to science specials. The events are different to other things you’ll find going on in the city and well worth checking out.

However, let’s not get distracted from what this place is really all about ... great, home cooked food.

The sandwiches cost £3.60 and there is a tempting range including lots of veggie options.

We had the soup and sandwich deal at £6. The parsnip soup was a winner, as was the bacon, brie and cranberry panini. But if there is something you really shouldn’t miss it is The Harland Chip Butty.

Described as a pile of twice-cooked chips on doorstep bread, you can’t get much better than this.

It would be enough to fire up any little mester for a very busy afternoon.

Dishes on the kids menu cost £3.15 which includes a carton of apple or orange juice. We picked penne pasta served with wonderfully fresh, homemade pesto and it quickly disappeared.

And the cakes have to be seen to be believed. There are several on offer each day. The caramel brownie comes thoroughly recommended by every member of our family.

Add in one of the fruit smoothies (£3) and you would have to search high and low to beat it.
