Birthday boys and girls will have to get their skates on to enjoy a new scheme at iceSheffield.

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations this year, members of the public will be able to skate for free on their birthday as part of a ‘Happy Birthday’ scheme.

General manager Mandy Parker said: “The venue has been a huge success story since opening its doors in the city in 2003.

“The new Happy Birthday scheme is about giving something back to the community as a thank-you for the amazing support we have received over the last 10 years.

“With the Winter Olympics just around the corner we’re expecting the venue to be even busier during February.

“iceSheffield welcomes people of all ages and abilities, providing the very best facilities for young, old, new and established skaters, and people with disabilities.”

iceSheffield, which was opened by HRH Princess Anne in 2003, is one of only two dual-pad Olympic ice rinks in the UK.

The Sheffield International Venues facility in Attercliffe is visited by more than 400,000 people every year and welcomes 150,000 recreational skaters.

It has been recognised as a national Centre of Excellence for figure and dance and ice hockey and is one of the best ice sports facilities in the country catering for both recreational and elite skaters.

The venue’s Academy of Excellence is home to some of the country’s top skaters, including Peter Hallam, who has developed through iceSheffield’s Learn to Skate programme to become British Champion.
