The decor is eclectic and welcoming, with a bustling atmosphere. It might take you a while to get to a table, due to the dozens of leaflets plastered on the walls, begging to be read.

Menus change daily but usually include different flans, Homity Pie, soups and hot food such as curries or quesedillas.

South India is known as one of the world’s best spots for vegetarians - eating meat is largely considered to be a luxury there.

East West takeaway on Abbeydale Road follows that reputation with a staggering range of meat-free dishes on offer, including an entire vegetarian starter section, soups and dosas.

Among the most popular listed are rasma, a South Indian soup with tamarind juice as a base, chilli paneer and a vegetable platter with samosas as well as gobi Manchurian - or fried cauliflower in a tangy sauce.

Little Hanoi, London Road

Regulars rave about the tofu at this eatery bang in the middle of Sheffield’s culinary melting pot, London Road.

The traffic might not be (quite) as vicious as that in bustling Hanoi, but the food is authentic.

Even non veggies love the delicate, fresh summer rolls , fragrant hot and sour soup plus stir-fried morning glory in garlic sauce.

Prices are competitive, there’s imported beer and even a kareoke room upstairs should the night take an interesting direction.

Craft and Dough, Ecclesall Road, Campo Lane and Kelham Island

Meat-free Mondays are on the menu every week at this popular pizza and beer eatery, which now has three sites across Sheffield.

There diners can get a margarita for £5.

Other options include those with beetroot puree, root vegetables and brie, as well as those with wild garlic pesto bases.

As guilt-free as it comes, everything served at vegan restaurant Pure on Raw is natural and uncooked to retain as many nutrients as possible.

It’s not for everyone, but caters for an increasing audience. Particular praise has been given to the cakes.

Nourish, Pinstone Street, city centre

Vegetarian, vegan, Paleo - this healthy fast food stop does it all.

A new menu has just been launched, with breakfast salad, sweet potato falafel, Brazilian beans and coconut lentil curry among the veggie options now available for pickup or delivery.

The Showroom, Paternoster Row, city centre

Chef Jon Tite has a head start when it comes to cooking for vegetarians - he is one.

The Showroom cafe is steps ahead most when it comes to going green, and steers clear from cliches. Dishes include Shakshuka, a north African stew, and Thai curry with vegetables.

Plenty for meat lovers too.
