Turkey, roast potatoes, sausages swaddled in bacon and mounds of tasty vegetables all need to be present and correct, for meat-eaters at least.

But a Sheffield restaurant and bar has made a departure by devising a festive roast with a twist – Christmas Dinner Fondue.

Saw Grinders Union, which opened earlier this year at Globe Works on Penistone Road, is serving the meal on Sundays in December.

Fondue – a Swiss dish that involves submerging easy-to-handle, dippable pieces of food into hot melted cheese – is a staple of the restaurant’s menu all year round, including a Sunday dinner version, which explains why a seasonal interpretation has appeared this month.

The Christmas offering consists of slow-roasted turkey breast, pigs in blankets, roasted seasonal root vegetables, cubed roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, accompanied by a pot of hot, bubbling red wine gravy for dipping.

It is, says Saw Grinders Union, perfect for sharing – but there are only limited portions available at £24 for two people, so customers are advised to ring in advance to avoid disappointment.

The bar is located in a Grade II* listed former steelworks and cutlery factory built in the 1820s, and is named after a 19th century trade union. It is a cashless venue, taking payments by credit or debit cards, Apple Pay, Android Pay and contactless methods.
