The city eatery, known for its healthy and tasty Mexican food, closed its doors six weeks ago due to restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic, but is now set to return to its Sharrow Vale Road store, as a brand new delivery business.

Richard Golland, who launched the business in 2010 with his wife Abi, said the pair are itching to get back to work.

“We just had to open for our 10th birthday,” he said.

“We had such big plans to mark a decade in business, but even if the proper celebrations we had planned have to happen next year now, at least we’ll be rolling burritos on the big day.”

The pair have been hard at work for the past five weeks, transforming their Sharrow Vale Road store into a takeaway enterprise.

All of the service areas have been moved towards the door, so that customers don’t have to come inside, and Richard and Abi are in the process of having a hatch window put in, so that customers can stand outside to be served and to collect their items.

Abi added: “It’s been such a crazy time, for absolutely everyone, and we’ve had concerns about our staff, and been working hard to streamline the business.

“We’re absolutely delighted to be opening in time to celebrate our 10th birthday in Sheffield, it means a lot.”

Street Food Chef got its start at the Continental Market on Fargate in 2010, when their food - served out of their 3m x 2m trailer - was an instant hit with customers, some of whom came back every day of the three-day market.

Abi said: “We learnt so much on that first outing.

“We realised that it was important to us that we were proud of the food we serve, and we promised to each other that we would make everything from scratch from that day on.

“We still hold the same values 10 years later; we prepare and serve our food with love, endeavour to give the customer the best experience possible, and aim to keep things simple - but do those things really well.”

Richard added: “We have always made the food the star of the show, and we believe this is why our customers have given us such great support.

“The love for Sheffield’s independent food scene really is incredible, and of course right now, this matters so much.”

Street Food Chef will reopen on May 6, and will be serving from their store on Sharrow Vale Road, from Wednesdays to Sundays. You can get your Mexican food fix in two ways; use the City Grab app for delivery, or The Street Food Chef app for click and collect only.
