Popworld’s announcement this week that it will welcome back revellers from July 31 generated a huge response on Facebook, with more than 250 comments.

The nightspot on Carver Street in the city centre has now revealed the safety measures which will be in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Table service will be in place for all visitors; no shouting will be allowed, with customers asked to ‘leave the shout-outs to the DJ’; and dancing as we know it will be banned, with people advised to ‘bop on your seat, not your feet’.

Single-use drinks menus will be in use, hand sanitiser stations will be available throughout the venue, and frequently touched surfaces will be cleaned every 15 minutes.

The Government has yet to give the go-ahead for nightclubs in England to reopen but the measures in place suggest Popworld will be reopening more as a pub than a club for now.

It could be some time before nightclubs as we know them are back up and running.

In his July 17 briefing, while giving the go-ahead for bowling alleys, skating rinks and casinos to reopen from August 1, prime minister Boris Johnson said nightclubs and soft play areas would ‘need to remain closed for now’, though he said this would be kept under review.

Announcing its reopening, Popworld said: “Now it’s time to take the party from the living room and back to Popworld!”

Introducing the new safety measures, it added: “Safety first! Then good times!”

Other Sheffield nightclubs have yet to announce plans for their reopening, as they await further guidance from the Government.

CODE, on Eyre Street, said earlier this month that it ‘absolutely cannot wait’ to be given the green light to welcome back clubbers and was checking the news ‘every minute of the day’ to find out when that might be. In the meantime, it is continuing to live-stream DJ sets.
