The award winning club has operated for 40 years and has seen bands including Pulp, the Arctic Monkeys, and Oasis perform there.

Responding to The Leadmill’s tweet about the call to South Yorkshire Police, Detective Superintendent Martin Tate said: “Sheffield police consider The Leadmill to be an integral part of the city’s history and future and work together under the legislation.”

Addressing the club’s management, he asked: “Were you happy with the police response? A common sense discussion with our weekend public order response team?”

The club replied: “She was lovely and left happy with how we were operating.”

In response, Det Sup Tate added: “Good. You’ve got our support to navigate through difficult times.

“The Leadmill is a Sheffield institution and we will work together to keep everyone safe.”

In response to a suggestion from another Twitter user that a number of businesses are flouting Covid-19 rules, Det Supt Tate said: “I’ll be honest, I’ve not seen that and I live and work in Sheffield.

“Pretty much every business I’ve seen has been complying extremely well. Of course if some are not complying we will investigate. We don’t ignore it.”
