Pubs and bars in England were allowed to welcome back customers on July 4 but Public has taken longer than most to reveal its plans, due in part to the compact size of the venue which opened in 2017 in the former toilets at Sheffield Town Hall.

That’s now changed, with the owners announcing that ‘after a few bevs, some chin wagging and a bit of soul searching’ they’ve chosen Wednesday, August 12 for their big reopening.

“Many details to come around booking, food offer, the drinks yadda yadda but essentially, that’s it!” they added.

The pub has collected a clutch of accolades during its short existence, including being named Best Place To Drink in the UK at the 2018 Observer Food Monthly (OFM) Awards, Best Bar in Sheffield at the 2019 Exposed Awards, and earlier this year it was hailed as ‘exemplary’ in a new OFM guide to the nation’ best independent drinking and dining spots.

During lockdown, the bar showed its support for the Sheffield-educated Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis, amid the row over Boris Johnson’s aide Dominic Cummings and his now infamous visit to Barnard Castle, by offering her free drinks for life.

It remains to be seen whether the King Edward VII School alumna, who was controversially reprimanded by the BBC for her report on the debacle, will take Public up on the offer.
