Recommendation of the week: Relaunched Silversmiths restaurant delivers on the menu

We were among the lucky few to sample the menu of new chef Ashley Bagshaw at the refurbished Silversmiths on Arundel Street, writes Angela Furniss.

The city centre restaurant has an interesting story – it famously went on to win numerous awards after being featured on Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares programme and has just been relaunched by local businessmen Rick Bailey and Matt Ray, after closing suddenly this summer, the second time it had shut in just a year.

The new owners are promising to “ensure Silversmiths reaches its true potential and becomes one of Yorkshire’s premier independent fine dining brands.”

At the launch last Friday a stylish and inviting restaurant from the outside drew us in and the scene was set for an intimate dinner.

Our first sample meal was a chicken dish, a pressed chicken thigh, succulent with crispy skin, complemented with an artichoke, a burnt leek, a smooth and fragranced tarragon gel finished off with a soft creamy chicken butter.

Other options included pan fried duck breast, barbecued cod supreme and a vegetarian dish of celeriac, apple, dates and truffle. Our dessert was a strawberry cheesecake, a soft, creamy cheese laced with a burnt white chocolate then complimented with a white chocolate parfait. A refreshing strawberry sorbet completed the dish.

The menu met all expectations, and let’s hope this latest version of Silversmiths can go the distance.
