Five Rivers Coffee Co launched three years ago in Broomhill, trading from a café painted bright orange close to the corner of Fulwood Road and Nile Street.

It was the idea of Jim Rose who, after leaving home in Millhouses to go travelling in the Far East with his girlfriend Melissa, became so enamoured with Vietnamese coffee that he started his own business when he returned, designing a space where customers sit on cushions beneath colourful lanterns.

Since then the venture has expanded to offer more food alongside cocktails, Vietnamese wine and Thai beers – and, 18 months ago, Five Rivers opened a second site at Cutlery Works in Neepsend, sharing a roof with sellers offering sushi, poutine, ‘bean to bar’ chocolate and more.

However, on February 16 Five Rivers left the food hall.

“We’ve spent the last few months thinking about the best way to grow the big orange Vietnamese brand that loads of you have come to love so much and after much thought and deliberation we’ve decided to not renew for another term at the wonderful Cutlery Works,” Jim said on Facebook.

“For the time being there will just be the one bright orange Vietnamese place in Sheffield as Five Rivers Broomhill isn’t going anywhere. We’ve got our eyes peeled on a few different plans to bring another saucy little spot somewhere else in Sheffield.

“It’s been an absolute whirlwind since opening which allowed us to grow from a humble coffee shop to an all-singing, all-dancing café/restaurant/bar combo but we’ve felt the time is right to concentrate on other exciting projects and let another tremendous independent smash it out from our little kitchen.”

Vietnamese coffee is poured through a special filter and sweetened with condensed milk.

Named after Sheffield's quintet of waterways, the brand was initially called Năm Sông, which translates as 'five rivers'. The orange decor raises awareness of lethal Vietnam War chemical weapon Agent Orange – donations are made to charities.
