OPINION: “There's a real sense of optimism about in Sheffield now that the latest set of Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted”

From those waiting in queues to get their first haircuts of the year, to those basking in the sunshine in Sheffield’s beer gardens, everyone seemed to be in a good mood as the latest set of Covid-19 restrictions were lifted.

It felt as though a weight had been lifted off the city’s collective shoulders, as non-essential shops, gyms, hairdressers, as well as the outdoor areas of pubs and restaurants, reopened to customers today.

For the first time in a long time, the city centre felt busy and people seemed genuinely delighted to be in the company of others again.

As I chatted to people in beer gardens, and bar staff getting back into the swing of things, it was clear today was a day that many had been waiting for.

Almost everyone I spoke to said the thing they had most been looking forward to was seeing other people.

It was so lovely to hear the familiar noise of a crowd of people talking, laughing and enjoying themselves again.

While we have some way to go before all Covid-19 restrictions are completely lifted – and none of us should become complacent about the dangers of the virus; this latest next stage of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown has brought us a lot closer to a return to normality, and there was a real sense of optimism about.

As the saying goes, you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, and I think it’s safe to say none of us will take the privilege of social contact for granted again.
