Legendary Sheffield takeaway Chubbys to close after serving customers for 40 YEARS

Chubbys on Cambridge Street is to close on August 31 due to redevelopment work in Sheffield city centre.

Sheffield Council’s ‘Heart of the City II’ redevelopment scheme is aimed at breathing new life into the city centre and takes in Cambridge Street.

In a Facebook post to customers the owners of Chubbys said they hope to ‘relocate’.

They said: “After 40 years we are very sad to inform you that Chubbys will be forced to close from Monday, August 31 due to the proposed redevelopment of Cambridge Street.

“We hope to relocate as soon as possible - please keep a look out on Facebook for updates.

“Thank you all for your custom, loyalty and support over the past 40 years.

“We look forward to seeing you in the future.”

Posting on Facebook, customers past and present spoke of their sadness at the closure and recalled their memories of the eatery.

Sue Bateman said: “Best end to a good night out - Josephine’s’ followed by a kebab from Chubbys.”

Yvette Ashton Milnes added: “Gutted you’re moving. Been going there since my 20s and still been in my 50s.

“Was gobsmacked when I recognised the same bloke working there, who hadn’t changed a bit.

“Always ended our nights in there, loved it.”

Yvette Wright posted: “One of my friends told me last night, so sad. I've been going to Chubbys since mid 80s. Best cheese sauce ever. Hope you find new premises soon.”

Liam McCann said: “Had my first date with my future wife here. 26 years later we took our 11-year-old daughter to introduce her to the famous chips and cheese and show her where we met.“Will have to call in for one final time before the end of August.”

Jane Shoeib added: ”Been going in Chubbys since early 80s...the best place to go starving after a good night out.

“That cheese sauce is the best. And those kebabs...You need to find a new place as Sheffield needs you.”
