As part of National Fish and Chip Day 2024, The Star visited Sheffield’s top-rated chip shop to find out more about the trade.

Richard Pearce, aged 56, is the proud owner of Frymaster - the best chip shop in Sheffield, as rated by Google users.

It was a life that was always meant to be, after he was literally born in the flat above his parents’ chip shop in Attercliffe.

By the age of 16, Richard had left school to join his family’s business - and for the past 40 years, Richard has lived and breathed fish and chips, saying: “It’s all I have ever known.”

In 2011, Richard bought the current premises of Frymaster, at 653 Attercliffe Road, a former brothel that was seized by the Serious Organised Crime Agency in 2004. Now he’s the third generation of his family to make a success of the business.

He said: “I’ve been doing it straight from school - I’ve done quite well out of it. A lot of people refer to us as being the hub of the community.”

Despite its 4.8 out of 5 star rating on Google, Richard remains humble. He and his 15 staff dedicate their time to serving customers the best fish and chips, with quality ingredients, affordable prices, and of course, the family’s secret batter recipe.

“We do things the best we can,” Richard said. “Since 2020, it’s been the toughest I’ve ever known it, but it’s nice that people still take their time to review us. I just want to cook fish and chips to the best of my ability, and hopefully people will enjoy them.

Richard has kept his family involved in the business, and is helped out in the shop by his wife Nicola, and son Tom - guitarist in the band Pearl Heart.

The team is planning a big refurbishment next year of Frymaster, which will tie into the industrial heritage of Attercliffe.
