Greggs to close all stores throughout UK

Greggs has become the latest high street chain to close all of its outlets across the country because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The bakery paid tribute to it’s staff, as well as key workers “at the front line of this crisis”, as it announced it was temporarily closing from Tuesday (24 March).

It said operating a takeaway service was not enough to maintain social distancing and they “needed to go further”.

A statement from the company said: “While we are closed, we will continue supporting our colleagues with full contract hours for as long as we are able although we will need to keep this under review as the situation develops.

It also confirmed any unsold food would be distributed through its own foundation.

McDonald's, Nandos and Subway are among multiple chain restaurants to announce they are also closing sites across the UK to help stop the spread of Covid-19.
