Fish and chips in Sheffield: FryMaster keeps prices low for nation’s favourite dish
With bills rising for everybody, people are feeling the pinch and skipping treats they would have otherwise enjoyed.
But one family run fish and chip shop, which has served Sheffield for nearly 80 years, is determined not to pass on giant price hikes to customers.
Richard Pearce, who runs FryMaster on Attercliffe Road, says keeping a British staple affordable for his customers in the tough times is his main ambition. And that’s one of the reasons his chippie and restaurant gets an overall five star rating from reviewers on TripAdvisor.
He said: “Everyone’s bills have gone up – the support we got for electricity and gas increases has been reduced, wage bills have gone up by 10 per cent, food prices have rocketed. But we are committed to keeping our prices low.
“Fish and chips is the nation’s favourite dish and we want it to still be an affordable option, despite all the other price increases.”
Take-out fish and chips cost just £5.55, while a set meal as a takeaway, including fish, chips, peas and a can of pop is only £7.75. Sit in at FryMaster and you can have fish and chips, peas, beans, curry sauce or coleslaw, for just £7.10.
As well as absorbing most of the price increases himself, Richard has dropped bread and butter and bread cakes from the meal deals to keep them affordable, meaning his prices have only gone up by a fraction this year.
Richard, who is now 55, has spent 40 years working in the family business, and is proud to say they still cook their favourite dish in the exact same way as his Aunt Eliza did when she first set the business up, and keeping the Great British tradition alive is vital to him.
“We are looking at the bigger picture. We want to be loyal to our customers when times are tough, to help them out as much as we can, and hopefully they will be loyal to us for many years in the future.”
Looking back over the years the Sheffield firm has been in business, Richard said: “As a family with roots going back almost 80 years we have seen many times of hardship for the local community, from the 70s and three day weeks through to Covid and the cost of living crisis. We’ve always been there for our customers, and if that means trimming profits for a few years to keep people coming through the door to enjoy fish and chips, the nation’s favourite dinner, then we are happy to help. We want to make it the affordable option for families not just a once in a while treat.”
As well as offering take out fish and chips six days a week, FryMaster has a 70-seat restaurant, with free parking close by, wheelchair access, free WiFi and air conditioning. Party bookings are also welcome. You can even place your order online.
