Do you need to pre-book to go to pubs in Sheffield on Saturday? New rules explained

With pubs, bars and restaurants set to reopen this weekend, many people are still unsure if they need to pre-book.

Government guidelines state that managing entry numbers can be done “through reservation systems”, among other measures, but this is not compulsory.

Ahead of Saturday different venues have different rules in place, so it’s best to check in advance.

At Wetherspoons, which has 900 branches in the UK, customers do not have to pre-book but may have to queue to get in as capacity is limited. Signs have been put up outside pubs to make sure households social distance while they wait. Other chains – including Brewdog, Hungry Horse and Greene King - will require customers to book a table in advance.

Government guidance states: “The opening up of the economy following the COVID-19 outbreak is being supported by NHS Test and Trace. You should assist this service by keeping a temporary record of your customers and visitors for 21 days, in a way that is manageable for your business, and assist NHS Test and Trace with requests for that data if needed.”

South Yorkshire’s Police’s chief constable has confirmed extra police officers have been drafted in to cope with an expected increase in demand this weekend, with hospitals expecting to be as busy as New Year’s Eve – traditionally one of the busiest days of the year.
