David Shepherd, Service Director for Economic Regeneration and Culture at Barnsley Council, said the businesses are key to the growth of the town centre.

“It’s great to see a fantastic range of new businesses opening in Barnsley.

“The Glass Works and wider town centre is going from strength to strength. All of these new businesses are key to our town centre’s growth, particularly the food and drink outlets which have completely transformed Barnsley’s evening and night time scene.”

The new additions in Barnsley town centre have been complemented by a new independent cocktail bar, caled Hill 16, which opened on Market Hill at the start of December, while The Victorian Arcade also welcomed a new Italian dessert parlour, called Angelini’s Gelateria, in November.

The eclectic mix of new town centre businesses opening their doors, which is a total of 12 since the start of October, means Barnsley continues to defy the decline of the high street odds.

The new openings are part of Barnsley Council’s commitment to creating a vibrant, family friendly town centre, full of opportunity and potential. The council is running an #OwnIt campaign, asking people to support local business in the area by visiting Barnsley town centre regularly, spending their money locally, attending events and positively promoting their town.

Councillor Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “We’re proud people in Barnsley - and we want everyone to be proud of our fantastic town centre.”
