A number have their own farm shops where you can buy produce grown and reared there direct from the farmers. In many cases, there’s also a chance to meet the animals, see the produce being grown and learn more about the food we eat. And it makes a much better family day out than a trip to the supermarket.
We asked The Star’s readers to name their favourite farm shops near them and there were lots of great recommendations. Here are some of the best.

10. Welbeck Farm Shop
Welbeck Farm Shop in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, is a bit further afield but is worth the journey according to our readers, with Donna Louise calling it 'amazing'. Its website describes how it works with the most amazing community of food producers that call this estate their home'. Its Made at Welbeck range includes artisan breads, handcrafted ales, and cheese, as well as milk from the estate’s pedigree dairy herd. Photo: Google
11. Firs Farm Shop
Firs Farm Shop, on Ringinglow Road, Sheffield, is on a family-run farm and sells home-reared fresh beef and lamb , locally sourced pork and free range chicken, eggs and potatoes. One review on Google calls it the 'best place to buy meat in Sheffield' due to the 'stunning quality, knowledge of provenance, and the very highest welfare standards'. Photo: Google
12. Whirlow Hall Farm Shop and Butchery
Whirlow Hall Farm Shop, on Whirlow Lane, Sheffield, is open Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am to 5pm, and on bank holidays until 3pm. It sells meat reared on the farm along with a range of other locally sourced products, including coffee, flour, cheese, beer and wine. It also stocks cards, children's books and toys.
