After trawling through all the votes Shaws Fish and Chip Shop, of Killamarsh, was crowned The Star’s Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition.

Owner Richard Shaw, aged 38, has run his business in Bridge Street for six years, although his family have been in the trade since the 1920s.

He added: “It seems people really appreciate what we give them and I’d like to thank them all for their votes.

“I am really pleased to have gained number one spot. It just makes all our hard work worthwhile. In an increasingly busy world I really appreciate that people have gone out of their way to vote for us.”

Mr Shaw added: “My family have been cooking up fish and chips since the 1920s and I am the 15th generation of fish fryers.

“I’m here with my wife Natalie, daughter Lucy and mum Dianne. We were in Worksop before moving to Sheffield. I have been here for about six years. Before we moved here the fish and chip shop was on the verge of closure, but we took over and we have turned it around."

Star readers voted over several weeks for their favourite chippy in the competition earlier this summer.

Ten finalists went head to head and readers chose their favourite.

In second place overall was the Intake Fish Bar, of Mansfield Road.

Owner Mak Singh, aged 42, said: “I’m chuffed to bits to gain second place.

"Me and my wife Khushi would like to thank all our customers for voting for us.”

Finishing in third spot was Sid’s Fish Bar, of Wheata Road, Parson Cross, which is run by Sid Singh.

After hearing that the chippy was in the top three chippies his son Herbie, aged 35, said: “We only started this business three years ago so this is great news.

"I would like to thank all our customers for their great support.”
