Hot on the heels of multi-billion selling action figure game Skylanders, Nintendo has released its own range of toy figures which can interact with its games.

Amiibo is a range of mini-figures based on the games giant’s hottest properties like Mario, Zelda and Metroid which each have a built-in communication chip.

Place one on the Nintendo Wii U console’s Gamepad, and the figures will be able to interact with games directly.

The idea has already worked for Disney Infinity and Skylanders, but now Nintendo wants in.

The figures are compatible with titles including Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros and Hyrule Warriors and will be used in more games in 2015.

New weapons can be used in Hyrule Warriors to unlock new weapons and in Smash Bros to allow fighters to be trained on the game and beamed back to the figurine.

For youngsters and collectors alike, the figures, priced £10-12 each, are sure to be a hot favourite this Christmas and beyond.
