Night Elton played at the Top Rank for a Christmas do

SIR Elton John playing in Doncaster next year? Seen it all before! That will be the feeling for some borough residents who have already seen the star strut his stuff in the town – four decades ago.

The singer is due to perform at the Keepmoat Stadium next yea.

But he has already performed to an audience in the Doncaster around 40 years ago before he hit the big time as a global superstar.

Some music fans remember him performing with his band Bluesology, with Long John Baldry, at the Top Rank Suite in Silver Street, which closed in 1974, and is now occupied by the Trilogy club

It was a one-off show for staff at the Doncaster tractor firm, all members of the International Harvester Recreation Club.

Among those there on the night was fan Ray Nortrop, who was the DJ that evening.

He said: "I think the fee was a lot of money by the standards of the time, and certainly a lot more than I got paid for DJ-ing.

"At the time there was nothing significant about the band, but I think there were about 2,000 people there because it was near Christmas.

"I shouldn't think Elton John would remember much about it now, but the venue had a revolving stage. It was the only one in Doncaster. They would have been on the bill with the Ray Brookes band, who were the resident band."

Yve Robinson, who runs the Bawtry boutique Robinsons, knows Elton from her time running the Air recording studio in Monserratt in the early 80s. He has supported charity events she runs in Doncaster with donations of memorabilia.

But she remembers getting his autograph before she knew him when he was in Doncaster to watch his football club Watford play Doncaster Rovers in 1978.

The Elton John concert is at the Keepmoat Stadium on July 12 next year and tickets are priced 40, 60 and 75.
